Water helps men’s health
Ben takes the Movember message to the open water
GETTING out on the water and spending a few hours fishing is what Ben Bischoff does to unwind.
The 41-year-old said when he was going through a tough patch in life about three years ago he found “vitamin sea” the best thing for him.
“Like a lot of men, I too have had challenging times and I found kayak fishing was something I could do that was outside of work and family and everything,” Mr Brischoff said.
“It just got me out of my own head and allowed me to unwind for a few hours a week.”
Recently he got others out on the water to share the joy and raise some funds for Movember. Mr Bischoff held a social paddle and fishing event last weekend to help raise much-needed funds and awareness for men’s health.
This is the second year Mr Bischoff has signed on to the annual moustache-growing and fundraising event but his goal is about more than facial hair and raising money.
Working in the male-dominated gas and construction industry, he has seen first-hand the struggles that men face with their mental health.
“I want to raise some funds to support the foundation but it’s more about the awareness and conversation bit for me,” he said.
“As blokes there’s this idea that we need to be the ‘tough one’ and as a result we can be too proud to have a chat about the important stuff.”
Mr Bischoff said it was great to see people getting outside and talking to others at the weekend. He will continue raising funds for the rest of the month. For more information, visit au.movember.com.
