Challenging ride with big pay off
HER mission was to prove you can do anything you set your mind to – and Laura Descy did just that last weekend.
The 32-year-old was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) two years ago and while it made exercise harder, she refused to let it stop her.
“I’ve always been active and even though MS makes it difficult to exercise it isn’t impossible,” she said.
To prove this, she recently rode 105km on a tandem bike from Warana to Gympie to raise awareness and funds for MS.
“It was tough, really tough and it took it out of me quite a bit,” Ms Descy said.
“I’ve never really put my body through anything like that since I was diagnosed with MS.
“Pretty much once I got past Maroochydore I stopped feeling my legs and after that I had to be lifted of the bike and carried.”
Despite this she said it was an amazing experience and she was proud of her effort, having raised more than $1500.
“I was out of action for a couple of days afterwards, but it was still so worth it, and I’d do it again,” she said.
“A couple of the guys who came with me want to make it an annual thing and I’m already thinking about the next challenge I can do.”
