WHILE she will never meet the person who saved her life, Kate McColm will forever carry a part of them with her.

Ms McColm had kidney failure, she had been receiving dialysis treatment for three years and she was unsure if she would make it to her 24th birthday.

Then she received a call that changed her life forever.

She was undergoing dialysis when her doctor told her they finally found a new kidney for her.

“It was instant relief and I just burst in to tears,” Ms McColm said.

Ms McColm told her story at the unveiling of a new mosaic art tribute at Sunshine Coast University Hospital. The tribute has been erected in remembrance of those who have donated organs and is the first-of-its-kind in Australian hospitals.

Ms McColm said she hoped it would start a conversation around organ donation.

“Through opening up that dialogue it will help save lives.”

DonateLife spokesperson Shona McDonald said signing up to be an organ donor was a simple process.

“You just need to go to the website, have your Medicare card on hand and it takes 60 seconds to register your wishes,” she said.

“It’s so much easier for families in that time of immense grief when they lose a loved one to know what their wishes are and to honour that wish.”
