Opportunity for intern overseas
KAELAN Lockhart is expanding his global mindset after he was announced as one of five UQ student recipients under the New Colombo Plan program.
The Warana resident has been named as a New Colombo Plan fellow to continue his engineering studies in Vietnam.
Mr Lockhart will start the scholarship program next July with intensive language training in Ho Chi Minh City.
He will remain in the city studying for two semesters and interning with Engineers Without Borders in Cambodia.
After his second semester abroad he plans to remain in the country to do a six month internship where he will put to use his newly formed language skills.
“As Australia’s fastest growing export market in ASEAN I feel we have a responsibility to share the methods and technology developed in Australia for renewable energy.
“I plan to apply my learnings about sustainable energy to assist remote communities in Vietnam with access to reliable, renewable energy,” he said.
Mr Lockhart is one to take opportunities when presented.
He is currently studying abroad in Denmark and is excited for his new ventures in Asia.
“It was unbelievable, due to the prestigious nature of the award I was very realistic but hopeful going into the application.
“To find out that I had been acknowledged as the Vietnam fellow was far more than I could have ever have expected,” he said.
Global Engagement and Entrepreneurship director Jessica Gallagher said the program would help students develop networks and skills that would give them a competitive advantage when they graduated.
“We are incredibly proud of our chosen scholars, including our two fellows who have been ranked the top candidates in Malaysia and Vietnam.
“International programs such as this help shape future leaders by providing students with diverse working experiences”
