Maroochy Weekly - - SPORT -

SUNSHINE Coast coach Ashley Holznagel has commended his charges on their composure after they surged to the top of the state premier grade Twenty20 ladder.

The Scorchers won all three of their matches last weekend to assume top spot on the 12-team standings, with four rounds to play.

Each of the games was hard-fought but the Sunshine Coast showed character and poise to claim victories.

The team beat Gold Coast by six wickets and Wynnum Manly by nine runs at Graceville on Saturday before toppling Norths by three wickets.

All-rounder Alecz Day proved a key player in all matches, while young bowler Tom Olsen returned from injury with promise and batsman Nick Selman caused plenty of damage.

While they are 10th in the two-day competition this season, they are in prime position to make the four-team finals of the Twenty20 format.

The Scorchers have fared well in the shorter format in the past, reaching three finals. But they’re yet to claim silverware.
