Built to Last

-

In the October issue, Peter H asked about a system built to last, and your response was the old computer you let your wife and kids use. I believe the question was more on a system that will actually last, because any new system will be relevant for long-term use for Internet purposes.

I have recently also built a computer to last. I started with a Platinum- rated power supply, with an MTTF of more than 100,000 hours. I also try for a fanless setup wherever possible, eliminating moving parts. If not, use high- quality fans, such as Noctua. Also important is a high- quality motherboard with Japanese capacitors. You can also get a Corporate Stable Model (CSM), as well.

I have an Asus mobo running a Core i7- 6700K (never overclocked), Samsung Pro NVMe solid state drive, and 16GB memory, EVGA Platinum power supply (10- year warranty), and no video card (gasp). This system boots in seconds, is very responsive for everything I do, and completely silent. This system will last, and be relevant, for years. Add a video card, and it’s a gaming rig. –Doug Heerema EXECUTIVE EDITOR ALAN DEXTER RESPONDS: This is an impressive build that will indeed last for many, many years. And, as you say, pop a graphics card in the slot, and you’ve got an instant gaming powerhouse. Our recommendation to Peter H was a little more concerned with keeping the initial outlay low, which is why pointing him at an older machine made sense to us.
