Oculus Rift 2 Canned
VR pioneer Oculus has canceled its Rift 2 headset, which was to have been a complete redesign of the original. The company also saw the departure of one of its co-founders, Brendan Iribe, apparently over fundamentally different views on the Rift’s future. Oculus is part of Facebook, and it wanted a more accessible headset that didn’t need a high-end PC. It seems Iribe, head of the Rift 2 development team, didn’t agree.
A new Rift is being developed still, expected early next year. It’ll be a more modest upgrade, losing the external tracking, which is tricky to set up, but accurate. It looks as if Facebook wants to focus on sales over the experience.
