Heavy vehicle boost was worth the weight
VICROADS has said it is supporting farmers during harvest season by allowing larger loads on approved heavy vehicles under the Grain Harvest Management Scheme.
Online applications for the next season are now open and allow participants to increase their load by five per cent, resulting in fewer trips by trucks delivering grain to participating receivers.
Eric Henderson, VicRoads’ director of heavy vehicle services, said the scheme gives operators greater ability to transport more grain safely.
“We know that the grain harvest season is a busy time of year on our roads, with farmers and heavy vehicle operators transporting big loads across the state and we’re here to support them,” Mr Henderson said.
“Safety is our number one priority, which is why the scheme is available to operators with newer and safer vehicles made on or after January 1, 2002.”
Mr Henderson said older vehicles can continue to operate as they have done so in previous years.
Following on from the success of last year’s scheme, the season will be extended from October 1 through to May 30, 2019 to reflect industry feedback.
