Santa ready to hit the streets
KIDS, did you know that Santa is coming to Heathcote not once but THREE times this year?
Once for Christmas, once for Carols and once for the annual Santa Lolly Run.
In the spirit of a 20-year Heathcote tradition, the man in red will swap his sleigh and reindeer for a CFA fire truck on Friday, December 21. From 7pm he and his ‘elf’ volunteers will drive to several vantage points around town, speaking to children and giving out lollies.
The event, which is organised by the Heathcote CFA, is free. Carl Watkins, Heathcote CFA captain, said that there are 14 places Santa will stop at. “Santa will drive the fire truck,” Mr Watkins confirmed. “Like a Mr Whippy van, he and his ‘elves’ will sound the siren as they go.’’
Mr Watkins said that in previous years there have been as many as 30 children on street corners, all eager to capture a glimpse of Father Christmas. And of course, pocket some lollies.
“Santa gets out of the truck at every stop,” Mr Watkins said. “It’s a great opportunity for kids to see him up close. It’s also a great way to make sure that everyone gets their fair share of lollies.”
Although Mr Watkins was uncertain about how many are given away, he did confirm that the brigade buys “several kilos” in preparation.
“It’s a lot of lollies,” Mr Watkins said. “Overall, the Lolly Run is a fantastic event. Each year parents tell us how much the kids enjoy it. But I guess we already know that, because Santa comes back empty-handed, every single time.”
The Santa Lolly Run starts at 7pm on Friday, December 21.
Santa will depart the Heathcote CFA and stop at the following “corner of” locations: Kilmore and Victoria Hill Roads; Herriot and Ebden Street; Ebden and Chauncy Street; Ebden and Pohlman Street; Ebden and Mitchell Street; Mitchell and Playne Street; Playne and Pohlman Street; Playne and Chauncy Street; Playne and Herriott Street; Wright and Chauncey Street; Wright and Pohlman Street; Wright and Mitchell Street; Shakespeare Street and Scullys Lane; Scullys Lane and Wattle Drive.
Santa will be driving the CFA truck around town, handing out lollies.
