HEATHCOTE Fire Brigade attended two illegal blazes on December 29, both being residents burning waste. Both fires were attended to by Heathcote units with the resident on both properties being charged by the police for lighting a fire in a declared fire danger period. One of these fires had spread to the neighbouring property by the time the brigade arrived.

On December 30, there was a lightning strike on the Tooborac-Baynton Road, Tooborac, which sparked a small fire in steep terrain. The hard-to-get-at location was attended by firefighters from Nulla-Vale, Tooborac and Pyalong, with support from Heathcote. A thermal imaging camera was taken the next morning to look for smouldering embers.

A grass fire in Gleesons Lane, Moorambool West, Costerfield was attended by two trucks from Heathcote. Mt Camel and two units from Costerfield attended as well as police. It was a small fire in logs and timber with an unknown cause.

On the first day of 2019 a small grass fire in Spring Flat Road, Heathcote was attended by two tankers from Heathcote with support from Tooborac and Costerfield. The cause of this fire was unable to be determined.

All these fires were small but the potential in some of them was quite large. Heathcote CFA urges all residents and visitors to be aware of their surrounds and conditions.
