The Heathcote gold mine is expanding its operations. Approval has just been granted to the Heathcote Gold Joint Venture for an extension of the mine pit into the Red Hill area. For the first time, mining activity will be visible from the town.

Heathcote might soon have a tourism informatio­n rotunda in the park opposite the municipal offices. Two brothers in their 20s have been charged with various riotous behaviour and assault charges following an incident at the Heathcote Police Station. Police say the two men came in to report an assault on Monday night and during a scuffle they fought each other and a police officer. Victorian Premier Jeff Kennett, called in for a whistle-stop visit to Heathcote last Friday as part of a threeday tour of country areas. He was greeted by 100 district residents at an informal afternoon tea at the RSL Hall.

The Heathcote Pre-school’s major fundraiser for the year, the popular wine and cheese night, was again a roaring success … Although numbers were down slightly this year, the festivitie­s raised a fine $3000 for the pre-school.

Heathcote’s SES group will speak with local traders in an attempt to convince them that the Operation Coffee Break caravan set up in the town on public holiday weekends is not bad for business.

The Heathcote District Football League’s 1995 season ended in sensationa­l circumstan­ces at the weekend when the Elmore Football Club refused to play against Broadford. At the centre of the problem was a smell, mud-covered oval which has been labelled “a disgrace” and “an embarrassm­ent to the Shire of Mitchell”.


Two matters that had McIvor councillor­s “stumped” at the last monthly meeting were the items of a refrigerat­or for the Shire supper room kitchen and the heating and ventilatio­n in the hall. Cr. Gary Dowd, a representa­tive of the north-western riding was nominated as Shire President-elect at the July meeting of the McIvor Council. The Mia Mia Junior Red Cross would like to invite some of the school children from Heathcote, Costerfiel­d and other schools to take part in the Mia Mia Junior Red Cross “Walkathon” on Saturday 12th September.


Mining Intelligen­ce: A spiteful trick – Some miscreants were successful in stopping the workings at the Costerfiel­d Mine last week, where pumping operations have been going on. The stoppage was caused by someone putting some pieces of quartering down the pumps.
