Walk the Yarra
Get in touch with nature just outside the CBD with a wander along the river.
Start at the Loop Picnic Ground, on Yarra Bend
Road, and follow the Dights Falls Trail, which passes the site of the former
Yarra Bend Lunatic Asylum and its well established gardens. There are some great views along the way, but don’t forget to look up to spy black cockatoos, sacred kingfishers and rainbow lorikeets.
About 800 metres past Dights Falls, you’ll come to historic Abbotsford Convent, a great place to stop for a coffee and pastry at Convent Bakery. While you’re there, check out some of the art galleries on site.
The walking trail finishes at Gipps Street, where you can stroll down Nicholson Street and on to Richmond’s Victoria Street, the heart of Melbourne’s Vietnamese community. Refuel at nearby Pho Hung Vuong 2, a lowkey eatery that serves an excellent noodle soup.
