Coun­cil names its deputy

THE City of Melville has elected a new Deputy Mayor, with Coun­cil­lor Tim Bar­ling step­ping into to the role for the next year.

Cr Bar­ling and Cr Guy Wieland put them­selves for­ward for the po­si­tion, with the for­mer elected af­ter a se­cret bal­lot.

Cr Bar­ling was elected as a coun­cil­lor for the Bate­man, Kardinya and Mur­doch ward in 2015 and has been a Kardinya res­i­dent for nearly 20 years.

This will be his first time serv­ing as Deputy Mayor.

For­mer deputy mayor Matthew Woodall stepped down as pro­to­col said there should be a new per­son in the role each Oc­to­ber.

Cr Bar­ling said that in his role over the com­ing year he hoped to play an im­por­tant role for the coun­cil that would be uni­fy­ing, un­der­stand­ing and con­struc­tive.

“Ad­dress­ing the sub­stance of items that come be­fore coun­cil is es­pe­cially im­por­tant with all of the ex­cit­ing and amaz­ing projects the coun­cil is cur­rently work­ing to­wards and what I care about the most is be­ing a cham­pion for the cause of the coun­cil, the City and our res­i­dents and ratepay­ers as a whole,” he said.
