Police bid to bag thieves

Melville Times - - Front Page - Aaron Corlett

MURDOCH police have launched a summer operation to target stealing offences at Kardinya Park Shopping Centre.

Murdoch Police Detective Sergeant Rob Martin said although offences were lower in Kardinya in 2018 compared to 2017, police had seen a trend in people stealing at the shopping centre and were targeting those responsible.

“Strategies have been initiated to target those people who steal from retail outlets and the public around the Kardinya area to help reduce the offending,” he said.

“Police are currently working with the Kardinya Park Shopping Centre management to increase security awareness and initiate crime prevention strategies.”

Sgt Martin said the public should not be surprised to see more officers patrolling Kardinya and although they did not want to alarm the public, they would be targeting the businesses.

“We will use all means to apprehend and prosecute those responsible,” he said.

“Murdoch police are keen to work with the local businesses and ask the public to be vigilant with their surrounds. Offenders will be opportunistic when it comes to stealing items, so keep an eye on what’s going on around you, secure valuables, remove items from your car and always lock your car.”

Community engagement co-ordinator acting Sergeant Stephen Flanagan has plenty of ideas for reducing stealing.
