Weight training in your twenties often felt like a competitive sport, but by now you should be past the point of trying to match the numbers on your neighbour’s bar. That doesn’t have to mean taking yourself out of the game, however. In your forties, you won’t bulk up as quickly as you used to, so focus instead on maintenance: staving off muscle loss and the accompanying drop in metabolism. Don’t be wary of working at high intensity – your body can still handle it. Just ensure that you give yourself a full day’s recovery time between workouts. You’re in it for the long haul.
