Ex­pos­ing your­self to “safe” stress can re­duce your sen­si­tiv­ity to it. The next time you find your­self in a nerve-rack­ing sit­u­a­tion, whether scal­ing a cliff or speak­ing up in a meet­ing, use this method to turn your fear into fuel

Step 1 Feel, Don’t Think

Take stock of your phys­i­cal sen­sa­tions from head to toe, with­out at­tach­ing any mean­ing to them. Shal­low breath­ing? Ac­cel­er­ated heart rate? Tense mus­cles? Check, check, check.

Step 2 Re­frame Your Re­sponses

Now re­mind your­self that these re­ac­tions can also be as­so­ci­ated with a range of pos­i­tive emo­tions, such as an­tic­i­pa­tion and ex­cite­ment. Re­call a time when you felt that way.

Step 3 Get Pumped Up

In­stead of forc­ing your­self to calm down, har­ness your “arousal en­ergy” and let it charge your per­for­mance. Sci­en­tists at Har­vard found that this was the best way to out­play anx­i­ety.
