I happy.am happiest when ... my kids Madi, 16, and Sam, 14, are

The last time I cried was ...

father a few months ago. at the funeral of a close friend’s

You wouldn’t know it but I ... kick the footy twice a week with an anarchic group of mates when I’m home in Melbourne.

An expression I use a lot is … “What? You’re kidding me!”

I’d go to a fancy-dress ball as ... I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t be there, as most of my life is about “dressing up fancy”.

I’m obsessed by ... most projects I’m involved in. At the moment, that’s Remembrance, so all things pertaining to the Australian involvement in World War I is all-consuming.

I’m inspired by ... great art and artists.

As a child I wanted to ... end up doing most things I do now.

My most embarrassing moment was ... forgetting the lyrics to a well-known song on Christmas Eve on national TV. I stopped the orchestra and we restarted the song. My first thought was, ‘Train wreck, end-of-career moment approaching!’ It all ended up OK and, in a way, intensified the meaning of the song.

I’ll never forget the day ... my wife Amber and I brought our first newborn home from hospital – “What the hell do we do now?”.

The thing that really bugs me is ... passwords. You need too many, you can’t replicate once you’ve used them, and they’re often forgotten at the most inconvenient time.

My worst job was ... changing nappies. Not a real job as such, but a chore nonetheless.

My favourite place is ... a little beach shack down the Great Ocean Road [in Victoria]. Quiet, yet dramatic area. Love to surf.

I can’t live without ... the radio.

My motto is ... “Breathe and follow your bliss” – thanks to Joseph Campbell.

Remembrance features artists from the Victorian Opera and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra. Federation Concert Hall, Saturday, April 18, 7.30pm. Book at www.tso.com.au
