Hobart’s war memorial is described as the largest in Tasmania. It replaced a temporary wooden monument (pictured above, from the Tasmanian Archives and Heritage Office) which was in place for the first Anzac Day observance in 1916. The permanent cenotaph – by definition an empty tomb – was officially unveiled on December 13, 1925, but on Anzac Day that year a casket of solid zinc was laid in the base of the memorial, containing the names of 522 Tasmanians who gave their lives in World War I. Lest we forget.
