JUNIOR FICTION Inheritance Carole Wilkinson Black Dog Books $17.99

Mercury (Hobart) - Magazine - - BETWEEN THE LINES - KATHARINE ENGLAND

When 14-year-old Nic’s father goes off to play in a band on a cruise ship she is left on the ancestral family property with her dour grandfather, a perpetual diet of sausages and no connectivity.

At a very loose end, she explores the old house and discovers a place where she can cross over into the homestead’s past. Here she meets some of her forebears and is a shocked witness to the fact that her inheritance is one of horror and shame. A school history project gives her the means to confront a past that the local landowners have long kept hidden and to make some sort of amends to those they so brutally displaced.

Wilkinson (Dragonkeeper series) has produced a book of striking integrity and wonderful period detail.
