Ed’s letter

-

In this week’s cover story Tim Martain tackles the loathsome and intolerant ideology of Neo-Nazism and the rise of far-right extremism in Australia. And just like Tim, I cannot believe we are still talking about it in the year 2020. Yet, prompted by a resident in the northern town of Perth Tasmania, who’s decided to display a Nazi swastika in the front window of their home, we are again forced to discuss this abhorrent and racist activity. And although it’s not illegal to do this in Tasmania and some might argue it is within our rights to express our political freedom in this way — what good can possibly come of displaying such a symbol of hatred and division? Hitler’s Third Reich was responsible for the genocidal murder of millions of Jews during the Holocaust and the swastika remains the most potent symbol of this abhorrent regime. We seem to be able to find the time to enforce laws against bikie gangs wearing their colours in this state, but not the time for laws preventing the display of Nazi symbols. Makes absolutely no sense to me.
