Back in the entry hall, there is no handle or a hint of access to be found at first glance, nevertheless if you know where to look a door will swing open and lead to a number of bedrooms, a bathroom with access to the pool and the laundry.

Upstairs there are five showstopping spaces.

The kitchen is gorgeous, the outdoor kitchen equally so, then there are plush living rooms on either side of the culinary area. Finally, the master bedroom offers sunrise views over the water, an ensuite with a walk-in shower and a dressing room.

The sleek kitchen offers Smeg appliances, a coffee machine, six-burner hotplates and a wide convection oven.

“The lounge room feels like an “inside” deck,” Mr Lyden said.

“You can slide back with the doors and it seems like you could almost throw a fishing line into the water.

“It is one of our favourite parts of the house.

“The ceiling was built so that it slopes upward and it flares out, which means you can take in the whole view.”

The deck off the kitchen would be an entertainer’s dream. Sit and eat, entertain friends, take in the view, pop open the roof if the weather demands it – everything feels “just right”.

For a builder, draftsman or architect, a challenge in creating your own home could be that it never feels “done” because you keep thinking of new ideas.

For Mr Lyden, No.34 Balook doesn’t present that issue. “I’m proud of what we built,” he said. “If I was to have a do-over, I don’t think we would change one thing.”

When so much thought and care has gone into a home, it’s never an easy decision to leave.

For the Lydens, they are moving on to something that will be a perfect fit for their family.

“We have got grandchildren and we love the idea of a place that has more space around us,” Mr Lyden said.

“We were dreaming about this home for many years, now we are re-dreaming,” Mrs Lyden added.
