It’s in the blood: Evans

- DAMIEN SEATON

WELL-BRED gelding Tazevedo gave every indication he will win better races with a tough effort in yesterday’s Two Year Old Maiden Plate (1100m) run on the inside grass at Elwick.

The Terry Evans-trained youngster was given the run of the race by apprentice Sigrid Carr, who had Tazevedo ($14) in a trailing position in third before gaining an inside run in the home straight and dashing to the front.

Tazevedo, by Azevedo from the former good racemare Cattle Kate, displayed plenty of ticker as he held off a serious challenge from Varian ($5) and Chilli Quest ($6.50), while race favourite Geegees Soprano ($3.90f) never looked likely and finished seventh.

‘‘We had a cushy run in the race but for a few strides I thought that we weren’t going to get a clear run at them,’’ Carr said.

‘‘I just had to be patient and when the run came he responded.’’

Evans expects Tazevedo will be suited over long journeys in the future.

‘‘This young horse is from a good family, her mum Cattle Kate won a Strutt Stakes for us in 1999,’’ Evans said.

‘‘This horse has a wonderful nature and he is likely to get a mile, perhaps a mile and a quarter. ’’

Tazevedo was purchased by Evans for $5,000 at the Tasmanian Magic Millions Sales and is owned by Evans and friend Wayne Upton. BROADMARSH t r ainer Brendan McShane produced a handy type called Athena Fire at Elwick yesterday.

Athena Fire’s win on debut put most punters behind the eight ball from the very start of the day.

Athena Fire ($31) led all of the way from an outside barrier, defeating Mercana Magic ($26) and Romp Around Jill ($15), while odds-on favourite Acacia Bloom ($1.75f) couldn’t make ground from behind on a track favouring leaders.

‘‘What she did today she did on class alone,’’ Mcshane said.

‘‘I would like to think that she will race over more ground in the future, at least a mile.’’

Athena Fire was confidently ridden by apprentice Bulent Muhcu. DAVID Pires took riding honours at Elwick with a treble. Pires was at his vigor- ous best aboard the John Hilltrained Bazanne ($7) in the the Class One (1100m) before leading all of the way on the John Luttrell-trained Dangerous Geegee ($34) in the Open Handicap (1100m).

Pires made it three for the day when the Julie Richards trained Relentless Pursuit ($14) won the Benchmark 0-78 Handicap (1550m).
