Karana shot down in flames

- MARIA GERATHY

LAST week’s round of the Aurora League netball competition saw one-sided games played around the state.

On Saturday night, Cripps Waratah trounced the Karana Flames 56-17 at Aurora Sports Stadium.

Cripps dominated from the first whistle and at the halftime break led 27-7.

Despondent Karana Flames coach Donna Terry said her team made far too many unforced errors.

‘‘We always knew that we were the underdogs. All I asked the girls to do was give it their best shot,’’ she said.

‘‘The biggest disappointment was that it was our last game of the season in front of our home crowd. I’ve got no excuses they just weren’t up to mark.’’

Cripps Waratah coach Fiona Geappen was very happy with the performance and felt the team was consolidating.

‘‘Our full-court pressure and ball movement was spot on,’’ Geappen said.

‘‘ It was pleasing to see the areas we are focusing on in training translating to the court.’’

Player of the match was Cripps’ Kate Archer.

Yesterday, the winners backed up with an equally impressive effort over the Burnie Tigers, winning 49-29.

Cripps controlled the game from the start, increasing its lead at every break.

Player of the match Jess Parsons worked hard in Cripps Waratah’s defence, taking numerous intercepts and causing many turnovers.

In other games, the Arrows were far too good for the Burnie Tigers.

Arrows’ full-court defensive pressure paid dividends with the Tigers struggling to score. Their teamwork was a significant factor in the win and with player of the match Hayley Sansom taking some timely interceptions, the Arrows ran out winners 56-22.

At the Silverdome on Saturday night, ladder leader Cavaliers easily accounted for the Kingston Blues.

In a hard-fought first half the Cavaliers led 23-19 at the long break. However the third quarter saw the Cavaliers lift the tempo giving them an 18-goal lead by the final break.

A blitz in the final quarter saw the Cavaliers run out winners 60-28.

Cavaliers’ Kate Gibson was named player of the match.

The Northern Hawks outclassed Devon 63-37 showcasing a new combination that proved unstoppable.

Player of the match Chelsea Coleman combined well with Celia Groenewegen in the goal circle, and both were well supported by wing attack Jade Woolnough.
