LOOKING
for an aboveaverage live show to attend this weekend? Adelaide hiphop crew The Funkoars and New York DJ Total Eclipse can help you out in case of emergency.
Known for their crass and controversial but clever rhymes, The Funkoars — Mr Trials, Sketchy Hons and Uncle Sesta — have been developing a cult following and pushing the boundaries of good taste since early this century.
They released their debut album Who’s Your Step Daddy in 2003, and established themselves as major players on the Australian hip-hop scene with the 2006 release of their second album The Greatest Hits.
The Hangover (2008) and The Quickening (2011) consolidated their standing.
In March The Funkoars announced their long-awaited return with the release of their new single Below Average, the first taste of their forthcoming fifth album In Case of Emergency.
To promote the album and single, The Funkoars have embarked on their Below Average national tour, testing out some new material alongside some older classics.
They are being joined on the road by a very special guest DJ — Total Eclipse from the X-Ecutioners collective, a former world champion who is renowned as one of the planet’s best turntablists.
After manning the turntables for the likes of JayZ and Pharoahe Monch in the early ’90s, Eclipse started dominating the DJ battle scene and won the 1997 International Turntablist Federation world championship battle.
That led to an invitation to join the X-Ecutioners, who released the groundbreaking album Built From Scratch and went on to tour with Eminem and Linkin Park.
The Funkoars, DJ Total Eclipse and emerging Melbourne rapper Eloji play at the Republic Bar in North Hobart from 10pm on Saturday.
Tickets are $20 (plus booking fee) pre-sale from the venue and www.moshtix.comn.au, or $25 at the door.
