THINGS THAT MAKE YOU GO SWOON

- — PENNY THOW

FLAUTIST Jane Rutter, accompanied by guitarist Giuseppe Zangari, guarantees her program of music at Epsom House on May 23 will have the audience swooning.

At her previous two concerts at Epsom House Rutter performed mainly French works, but for this concert she is branching out with tangos, Indian raga, flamenco-inspired habaneras and French Hispanic pieces.

Rutter said she had fallen in love with Epsom House as a performance venue.

“It’s a small venue with fantastic acoustics,” she said.

“In the quest to keep fine music alive, it’s great to be reminded of the kind of environment it was meant to be played in.”

Rutter said the flute and guitar were a great pairing.

“There is something very gentle, passionate and elegant about that combination,” she said. “I love every piece we will play. It’s all swoon material.”

The program will include L’aube Enchantee by Ravi Shankar.

“It’s absolutely stunningly beautiful,” Rutter said.

“Ravi Shankar was a friend of my tutor Jean Pierre Rampal and wrote it for him.

“It starts in a very meditative state and becomes increasingly frenzied, virtuosic, challenging and represents an ecstatic dance.

“L’Histoire du Tango by Piazzolla includes tangos from different eras. A couple are very fiery and one is very slow, meditative and beautiful.”

Other works on the program include pieces by Ravel, Ibert, de Falla, Coco Nelegatti and more.

Jane Rutter and Giuseppe Zangari will perform at Epsom House in Pontville at 7.30pm on May 23. Tickets are $85 and include pre-concert champagne and hors d’oeuvres, and dessert and coffee at interval. Bookings are essential. Phone 6268 0290 or email info@epsomhouse.com
