$3m can buy you a hole new life

- EMMA HOPE

A 100m tunnel deep inside the cliff face of a Tinderbox property is on the market for $3 million — and attracting interest around the world.

On 8.5ha, the property also features a two-storey concrete building with space for an adjacent helipad, a 4000-bottle wine cellar, a banquet hall and footings for a large clifftop dwelling.

It took mining experts more than six and-a-half months to build the tunnel.

The cellar is nine storeys deep, 35m from the sea shore and has power and water.

The site has been on the market about 18 months.

Charlotte Peterswald director Kim Morgan said the owner was a private man originally from Tasmania.

“He built this as a dream but his business interests have now taken him abroad,” he said.

“At the top of the tunnel on the clifftop are the foundations for a large home that was to be built as part of the project.

“The house would have sat on top of the tunnel and you would then traversed down to the foreshore and maybe picked up a bottle of wine en route.

“Further development of the site would be determined by one’s imagination.

“At one stage the owner had thought the property would be ideal for a retirement village.

“Given where it is, and the size and the property and the outlook, you could do all sorts of things.”

Mr Morgan said there had been interest from interstate and overseas as well as from wealthy Tasmanians.

“We get a couple of inquiries a month,” he said. “It will take a fairly special person to pick it up. But as we see regularly, a lot of people would like to pick it up.”
