Nigerian coach claims God is on his side

GOD knows how Nigeria will perform in its FIFA women’s World Cup match against the Matildas today, says flamboyant Super Eagles coach Edwin Okon.

Okon led a spirited prematch media conference at Winnipeg Stadium yesterday declaring the Muslims and the Christians in his squad pray as a unit and often look to the heavens for God’s help.

When hungry journalist­s were asking Okon questions about how unpredicta­ble and breathtaki­ng Nigeria could be, the laid back coach said he was proud to have one of the most entertaini­ng sides at the World Cup.

Okon said that Nigeria’s 3-3 draw with Sweden in Group D’s opening match at Winnipeg Stadium was a classic example and proof the Super Eagles were spontaneou­s.

“Yes we are unpredicta­ble,’’ he said. “But only one man can predict the way we play.

“And that is the almighty God. “He’s in charge. “He’s in charge team.”

While Okon declared he knew nothing about Sweden before his side copped two goals from set pieces during their match, he wasn’t convincing when asked if his knowledge of the Matildas was similar.

Australia has been working hard on its set pieces this week, and that ploy could come back to haunt Okon if he and his side aren’t ready to defend their penalty box.

“All we know is that we have to do what we have to do against the other team,’’ Okon said.

“Not only Australia, because if they’re not good, they won’t be playing at this level.
