WE’RE STILL A CHANCE

- ALEX LUTTRELL

STAR Hobart Chargers import Lewis Thomas still believes a tilt at the SEABL championship isn’t out of reach for his side ahead of its final round of games this weekend.

The Chargers have won three of their past five games and will meet Mt Gambier for the second time in as many weeks tonight, only this time at the DEC.

Hobart will then tackle lowly Frankston on the road tomorrow night.

If other results go their way the third-placed Chargers could still take out the Southern Conference minor premiership with two wins this weekend.

Thomas said it wasn’t too far-fetched to take out the minor crown and then, with finals starting next week, make a play for the Southern Conference and SEABL championships.

“If we win both, we finish up second and it is depending on results as to whether we get first,” he said. “But we’re just hoping to get a home final. All of us 100 per cent believe we can win it this year.”

Hobart lost to Mt Gambier, the 2016 SEABL runner-up and current Eastern Conference ladder leader, by 10 points last weekend and Thomas said his teammates needed to be more polished this time.

“We have to be a little more focused on how we defend certain guys,” he said.

“Defending one-on-one and making the right plays down the stretch and making sure we move, that’s when we’re dangerous.”

The Chargers meet Mt Gambier at 7.30pm at the DEC tonight before taking on Frankston at 8pm tomorrow.
