It is lovely in summer

HOBART also twinned with L’Aquila in Italy. I’nno prossimo forse (next year perhaps?). John Wilson Magra

Round figures

AUSTRALIA has 99 different visas. Surely it is not too much to expect that Peter Dutton will bring the total up to 100 and confirm our position in the Guinness Book of Records. Jim Heys South Hobart

Family members too

IN honour of Kodi, the dog who recently received the death sentence for complying with the canine duty statement ( Mercury, July 31), it would be great to see a pet included in all the happy family photos of politicians seeking election. Such might indicate that the pollie, if elected, would show some sensitivity in regard to animal rights issues. Ro Dallow West Hobart

Changes needed

GIVEN their protective instincts to both owner and property, most canines will defend their surroundings if feeling threatened. The Kodi story is particularly sad for all dog lovers and it is to be hoped changes to Tasmania’s Dangerous Dog Act can proceed accordingly. Chris Davey Lindisfarne

China must do more

THERE is undoubtedly plenty of “behind the scenes” diplomacy going on to try to curb the nuclear lunacy of North Korea. However, with the latest ICBM testing, one wonders how much China is actually doing to resolve the situation. On face value, not much. Raymond Harvey Claremont

Neighbourly love

ROD Force should feel privileged (Letters, July 29). He’s landed a preview of the realities of the new Statewide Planning Scheme — where your residential amenity is to be outsourced to the altruistic bloke who buys the underdeveloped block next door. Stephen Jeffery Sandy Bay

Lesson from history

I NOTICE the British are to send two warships into the South China Sea. Someone should remind them of what happened to HMS Repulse and HMS Prince of Wales. Peter McGee Lenah Valley

Out of the frying pan

HOW wonderfully feel good for the Poms and French to ban petrol and diesel vehicles by 2040. Don’t mention the nuclear power stations being built to provide the electricity thus needed for the electric replacements. Douglas Green Southport
