WITH the reported 10 per cent increase in crimes in Tasmania, in part due to a significan­t increase in murders and organised crime, questions must be asked as to why the dark side of life is producing so much suffering, grief, loss and anger in one of the safest and most beautiful islands in the world. Dysfunctio­nal relationsh­ips, substance abuse, certain mental-health issues and spiritual blindness are contributi­ng factors and, without these facts being dealt with holistical­ly, nothing is going to change for the better. The churches have a pivotal role in helping to address these problems, together with the wisdom and prudent policy-making of politician­s. But
