Edwards’ return will lift Ships’ title quest

- ADAM CLIFFORD

THE return of Kookaburras’ playmaker Jeremy Edwards has significantly boosted OHA’s hopes of a third straight Premier League hockey title.

The Ships face minor premiers North-West Graduates in today’s 3pm qualifying final, with the winner progressing directly to the grand final and earning a week off.

Edwards relocated to Perth after last year’s premiership and has figured in the Kookaburras’ recent World League semi-final campaign in South Africa and their Top End series against Pakistan.

OHA coach Daniel Sproule says his return has bolstered their side.

“Having Jezza back is a massive confidence booster for the squad. He’s a quality player with and without the ball, who sets the tone for the team,” Sproule said.

The two sides played out an entertaining 4-4 draw last weekend in the final roster match.

Sproule has called on his charges to be a lot cleaner in possession under pressure and for National Development Squad member Kurt Mackey to be their finals MVP.

Graduates coach Stephen McMullen revealed Kookaburras star Eddie Ockenden would not be returning “at this point” to play finals, choosing to instead focus on his side’s strengths.

“I think we have great depth in our squad which has us ahead of all of our rivals and I believe that our penalty corner battery will give us the edge,” McMullen said.

The losing side will meet the winner of elimination finalists Derwent and University, who square off at 1pm.

“We have matched up quite well against Derwent this year with two wins each between us and we are confident that we have the game plan to disrupt their flowing style of play,” Uni coach Paul Ancher said.

“Both teams will be giving everything to get the result so it’ll be important to be smart in the big moments.”
