Scott’s one-time-only visit

- RUSSELL GOULD

ADAM Scott has slashed his home summer schedule by a third and will turn out once this year, in the Australian PGA on the Gold Coast.

The world No.18, who has welcomed his second child, a son, Byron, will skip the Australian Open for the first time since 2008.

Scott has been a perennial attendee for Australian events for most of the past 10 years, often playing in the Open, the PGA and the Australian Masters, before it dropped off the golf calendar in 2015.

The Queenslander also turned out in the World Cup at Kingston Heath last November before going on to play in the Open and PGA.

But he has abandoned a potential showdown with reigning Open Championship winner Jordan Spieth and Jason Day at the Australian Open in Sydney because of his growing family commitments.

Scott missed the cut at the Dell Championships this week having raced to Boston from the Gold Coast where his son was born. The result means he misses the remaining two FedEx Cup playoff events, having also endured a lacklustre 2017 in which he failed to win on the US PGA Tour.

The PGA has already been boosted by securing this year’s Masters champion, Spaniard Sergio Garcia, and now a potential Sunday shootout with fellow Augusta victor Scott is on the cards.

“It’s great to see Sergio in the field for this year’s event and I am sure he and his family will enjoy all that the Gold Coast has to offer while they are in town,” Scott said.

Last week Day, also a Queenslander, said he would be playing the Aussie Open, but would not tee it up in the PGA. It will be Day’s first tournament in Australia since 2013.
