Protect precious public assets

- Louise Rigozzi Lindisfarne Ken Fros Claremont Ian Hay former executive dean, Faculty of Education, UTAS

THE Legislative Council is debating the Draft Cable Car (kunanyi/Mt Wellington) Facilitation Bill 2017 today. The Bill has been created to assist MWCC to go ahead with their project, however it would have far-reaching consequences. The precedent the Government is setting to undermine councils and seize public assets on behalf of developers is very dangerous territory. Should we have our public assets taken from us to assist developers? Wellington Park belongs to the Hobart City Council and the people of Hobart. Do we want a prime piece of it taken up by a large structure we have to pay dearly to get into and that profits a private company? Think of our other public assets, the botanical gardens, local parks and reserves, community halls, cemeteries and on and on. Do we want this draft legislation to affect decisions regarding every one of our public assets? Keep an eye out for the decision and see who puts our best interests at heart.

Thank you

THIS letter is to express my gratitude to the staff of the Royal Hobart Hospital renal ward after my admission a few weeks ago with renal failure. I was made to feel very much a valued individual and was given wonderful care by the nursing staff and doctors on the ward. I want to make special mention of the two doctors who looked after me, Allie Grawer and Duncan Sweeney. I have been in hospital many times in my life, somewhat a frequent flyer! But the care and concern shown by these two doctors was well above anything I have ever experienced. I want to express my gratitude at the kindness you have all shown me, but in particular Dr Allie. playing an active role. The quality of the Faculty of Education is recognised in its ability to attract quality teacher educators in a competitive market. For example, in mathematics education UTAS won the Australian Award for University Teaching. The evidence demonstrates a more positive picture of Tasmanian schooling and its teachers.
