Henning is in a sharing mood

- — PENNY THOW

NORWEGIAN violinist and composer Henning Kraggerud will direct the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra tomorrow afternoon in a program featuring his own compositions, as well as works by Grieg, Saint Saens and Massenet. A highlight will be the suite of Postludes 2, 18 and 19 from Kraggerud’s 24-movement work Equinox, composed in collaboration with Norwegian author Jostein Gaarder. Musically it explores the 12 major and minor keys as portrayed by a man who travels for 24 hours, visiting one location in each time zone. No.2 is Prague, No.18 is Puerto Vallarta in Mexico and No.19 New Orleans. Kraggerud’s Variation Suite for Violin and Cello will feature the composer and TSO principal cello Sue-Ellen Paulsen. It begins with a lyrical theme that is referenced in the subsequent dance movements. The program will begin with From Holberg’s Time Suite Opus 40 by Grieg.

The orchestral version was developed by Grieg from a piano composition written in celebration of the 200th anniversary of the Norwegian academic and philanthropist after whom the work is named.

The concert will also include Saint-Saens’ La Muse et le Poete, and Mediation from Thais by Massenet. It will conclude with Violin Concerto in G, an orchestral arrangement of Grieg’s Violin Sonata No.2 by Kraggerud and Bernt Simen Lund.

The TSO’s Norwegian Moods concert will be held at the Federation Concert Hall from 2.30pm tomorrow.

Tickets start at $32, for bookings go to www.tso.com.au or phone 1800 001 190.
