Long, hard haul for a finals berth

- ADAM SMITH

A FOURTH consecutive grand final appearance confirms North Launceston as the most consistent force the TSL has seen, but it is something the club’s leaders don’t take for granted.

The Bombers will be out to capture their third premiership, and atone for last year’s loss to Glenorchy, on Saturday against firsttimer Lauderdale at UTas Stadium.

Vice-captain Brad Cox-Goodyer is one of just four players who will have played in all four deciders — alongside skipper Taylor Whitford, Zac Burt and Jack Avent — and treats every one as if it could be his last.

“You feel privileged to play in one, no matter how many you play in,” Cox-Goodyer said.

“People are quick to forget before this run we were down the bottom of the ladder for a number of years.

“We weren’t in finals contention, we were finishing second and third last every year. For the guys that were there, they know what it’s like, so they don’t take this for granted.”

North Launceston will likely have eight players lining up for their first grand final, with one of CoxGoodyer’s roles to ensure they enjoy the build-up but to also ensure they understand success is earned, not given.

“When we won our first one four years ago Rhyan Mansell was coming to the footy with his dad as a 13-yearold supporter.

“It is really exciting having these young guys run out at 16, 17, 18 years of age, but they are pretty fortunate to be playing in a grand final.

“When I was that age playing senior footy we were finishing eighth every year. I hope they understand the privilege it is.”

Cox-Goodyer also said he has relished his senior role within the group this season, which has led to his most consistent TSL campaign.

“Personally it has probably been my best year of TSL footy in my career,” he said. “I’ve spent a lot more time on ball and I put that down to my body being in the best condition it has been in.

“I like the responsibility, I like to lead from the front with my actions, but the thing is you have a lot of guys out there helping you.”
