Sandy Bay neglect
I HOPE the new vice-chancellor of the University of Tasmania will give serious consideration to the potential negative social and economic impacts on the Sandy Bay community before he rushes to support moving the university into central Hobart. No longer will there be need for a good bus service or the small restaurants and businesses that the student population helps support. It would appear the city centre’s gain will be Sandy Bay’s loss.
Simple as ABC
IT’S OK for politicians, bank and Australia Post CEOs and others to have their income revealed, but these underworked and overpaid employees don’t want the public to know. They forget one important factor, they are paid by the taxpayers, and
Monstrous edifice
A DEVELOPMENT application for the Kangaroo Bay hotel and apartment complex has been resubmitted to Clarence council. This monstrous edifice will encompass three buildings, one with the ludicrous cobweb facings like the Menzies Institute, and the height and design will conflict with the heritage values of housing, most likely decreasing their worth. There is nothing to stop foreign investors from flogging off the development after completion, having been given the site by the State Government. It would have been an improved development if an old ship had been made into accommodation rather than this boat-shaped thing.
Manus cruelty
MALCOLM Turnbull and Peter Dutton have a vested interest in the public believing that the Australian Government is caring for the men on Manus Island. The United Nations has no vested interest other than that they are safe and member countries adhere to conventions they have signed. The UN has condemned Australia’s offshore detention centres repeatedly. The UN says the men on Manus Island have a well-deserved fear about moving to
Don’t spoil our view
THE Mt Wellington cable car is a disgusting idea. Imagine it. Every day as you go about your life in Hobart, the mountain is within view. How many times a day do you look at or notice the mountain? It’s Hobart’s view, from Kingston to Bridgewater to Sandford and beyond. Its raw beauty and integrity are going to be trashed. Why? To give tourists a good look round and a thrill and make some bucks for rich people. The tourists will be here one or two days, then leave. We live with the mountain, it’s our view, all year round, day and night, and we love it. Hands off.
Dog owners to blame
I’M afraid dog owners generally have only themselves to blame when restrictions are placed on them ( Mercury, November 10). There are numerous signs on the outer half of Seven Mile Beach stating “Dogs on lead at all times”. You continually see dogs running loose, harassing birdlife and horses. If people insist on disregarding the regulations, they should hardly be surprised when their animals are banned altogether.
