Eastern fare
PIANIST Gergana Manoilova’s PhD recital next week will feature mainly works by Eastern European composers. The program will begin with Five Preludes Fragiles Opus 1 by Russianborn composer Arthur Lourie, followed by Meditations by Vladimir Deshevov, who was also Russian. Also on the program will be Piano Sonata Opus 68 No.9 Black Mass by Russian Alexander Scriabin, whose early work was influenced by Chopin, but later became atonal and influenced by synaesthesia. Manoilova will play Etude No.4 Fanfares by Hungarian Gyorgy Ligeti, and Youth Album and Toccata by Bulgarian Vasil Kazandjiev, before the program concludes with Three Abstract Dances, by Turkish composer Ilhan Baran. The concert will be held in the Conservatorium Recital Hall on Sandy Bay Rd from 7.30pm next Thursday (November 23). Tickets are $10, available from www.utas.edu.au/music
Double act
VIOLINIST Emily Sheppard and pianist Michael Kieran Harvey will perform the Bartok Violin Sonatas 1 and 2 at the Lady Franklin Gallery in Lenah Valley twice on Sunday. Kieran Harvey will play the electric piano, and the concert will include poetry by Arjun von Caemmerer commenting on the uncompromising language of the sonatas. Kieran Harvey said the sonatas were still surprisingly contemporary sounding almost a century after they were composed. “Bartok wrote them for a young wunderkind, Jelly d’Aranyi, so it’s fitting they are performed by one of our own, Emily Sheppard,” he said. “Bartok’s language has influenced many progressive rock groups, so we felt it appropriate that we combine electronics with the acoustic violin in this performance.” Emily Sheppard and Michael Kieran Harvey will perform at the Lady Franklin Gallery (268 Lenah Valley Rd) from 6pm and 7.30pm on Sunday. Tickets are $25 for adults, $18 concessions, and $10 for school students, available from www.trybooking.com/SCEJ
