Here’s cheers to theatre reno

-

THE Hobart College Performing Arts department is set for a boost in coming years with a multi-million dollar theatre upgrade and redevelopment due for completion in 2020.

The new facilities will provide a larger foyer and box office and kiosk to cater to the comfort of large audiences.

Add to that some of the latest theatre technologies in lighting and audio and it is clear that Hobart College students will have some of the best opportunities for technical production and performance in the state.

Hobart College is known for its high quality public performances in musicals and drama. Over the past few years, Hobart College Performing Arts students have presented a number of ‘firsts’ with the Tasmanian premiere of the musical Catch Me If You Can and the Hobart premiere of Bring It On – The Musical, both of which are based on motion pictures.

The annual musical is a wonderful opportunity for students to collaborate across a range of areas with students involved in catering, front-ofhouse management, publicity and marketing, lighting and audio, hair and make-up, costumes and of course, performance with voice, acting and dance. The musical also enables students to be assessed for university level courses with the University of Tasmania.

This high standard of production quality extends to the Theatre Performance students who also have the opportunity to perform in the Mt Nelson Theatre with their final performance of their two years at college.

Recent productions included the Tasmanian premieres of Cloudstreet based on the novel by Tim Winton, The Nest and most recently Children of the Sun.

With the development of new top-class theatre facilities, the Hobart College Performing Arts team look forward to providing students with opportunities to collaborate and work with quality equipment in one of the state’s largest theatres.
