Collegiate takes centre stage
AN education in the performing and expressive arts begins early at St Michael’s Collegiate. Commencing in the Junior School, students enjoy time with specialist music and expressive arts teachers in order to foster skills such as creativity, collaboration, confidence, critical thinking, communication, cooperation, and teamwork.
The School commands large audiences to its regular musicals, and instrumental ensembles and choirs are in demand to perform at high profile public events.
Groups have recently been called upon for the Port Arthur 20th Anniversary Commemoration, ANZAC Day services and the Alannah and Madeleine Foundation cocktail party, and a range of Collegiate choirs are set to feature at the upcoming A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols at St David’s Cathedral on December 3. A partnership with Musica Viva Tas that sees masterclasses occurring at the School is also becoming a drawcard at Collegiate.
A highlight of 2017 was the School’s spectacular 125th Anniversary Concert held at Federation Concert Hall during September. More than 200 performers took to the stage in a celebration of the school’s rich history and longstanding commitment to the arts. The evening was topped off with the world premiere of Collegiate’s newly commissioned work, Set for Life, written by celebrated Australian choral composer Paul Jarman.
As girls move through the School, those who are talented vocalists, instrumentalists, dancers or actors may audition for Collegiate’s renowned School of Performing Arts. Speaking of the unique pro-
This was an experience they will never forget.
Claremont College music students are taking the many opportunities the college offers them to develop as musicians; gram, Director of Music and Performance, Mr Aaron Powell said: “From classically trained musicians through to contemporary dancers, Collegiate girls benefit from a range of masterclasses with industry professionals. They have the opportunity to perform at large scale public events and enjoy solid preparation for eisteddfods, AMEB examinations, and auditions for performing rts institutions at the completion of Year 12. You only have to look at the recent City of Hobart Eisteddfod awards to see the benefits of an arts education at Collegiate - the number of prizes and accolades awarded demonstrates the strength and depth of our art programs.”
