Building strong characters
THE Hutchins School offers a dynamic range of activities for students in many areas of performing arts.
The Performing Arts Faculty at Hutchins encourages creative thinking through processes that require an outcome – be that a performance, piece of art, dance routine or media product.
Head of Visual and Performing Arts, Mrs Michelle Weeding said that “whilst essentially product-driven we strive to nurture and value process as an essential ingredient in unleashing higher order thinking, problem-solving and communication skills.
Students can be part of drama performances in the Middle School and Senior School and also have the opportunity to participate in musical productions.
This year Drama students prepared class presentations at all levels as well as staging major performances for sold out audiences.
The School of Performing Arts offers extension group programs for boys interested in furthering their skills and techniques in dance, drama, music and musical theatre. SPA scholarships are also available and are offered annually in September.
Hutchins proudly boasts the largest boys dance troupe in Australia. With a combined 80 members in the Early Learning Centre, Junior and Senior School Dance Troupes, dance has a very strong presence at the School.
The troupes experience varying performance opportunities each year including local and mainland eisteddfods, speech nights and the Dance @ Hutchins Showcase, involving all of the Dance Troupes and some special performances from staff, parents and carers.
Students are also encouraged to participate in the Magenta & Blacker Arts Showcase which is a biennial community arts event.
We nurture and encourage all our students who wish to pursue performing arts careers and welcome many Old Boys back to share their amazing stories in performing arts.
