Hooked on summer boating

- SHAUN McMANUS

IT wasn’t quite the start of the Sydney-Hobart, but the Picketts’ maiden voyage in their new boat at Cremorne yesterday was no less exciting for the young family.

It may not be such great day to take the boat out today, though.

A top of 28C is expected for Hobart and there is little chance of rain, but strong winds are predicted.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Tim Bolden said there were strong wind warnings for Storm, Frederick Henry and Norfolk bays.

“It’s going to be a bit windier ... [it won’t be] as pleasant a boating day as today was,” Mr Bolden said.

Mel Pickett went with her husband Michael and children Colby, 10, and Joel, 7, for a test drive in the family’s new boat, which arrived just in time for Christmas.

Mr and Mrs Pickett, who live at Seven Mile Beach, are on holiday, and are looking forward to more adventures in the coming days.

“We’re hoping we might go camping. Now we’ve got the boat, we’ll be able to access more places,” Mrs Pickett said.

Marine and Safety Tasmania chief executive Lia Morris reminded people to stay safe on the water during the holiday period.

“It’s all about trip planning, so check the weather forecast and tides, and tell somebody your destination and your estimated time of arrival back,” Ms Morris said.

“Check your fuel, tick off your required safety gear, check that your boat is up to the trip, and check that things are stowed below securely.”
