Street signs needed

I VIVIDLY recall speaking with a Hobart City Council employee a few years ago when I was complaining about how many CBD intersections were without street name signs. He assured me the new “tourist friendly” signs that were coming would solve that problem and would be freely scattered throughout the CBD complete with maps and “you are here” symbols. By now, you have probably seen one or two … but that may be all there is. The ones I have seen place the maps at a height as to suggest visitors are all American basketball players when, in reality, the average visitors are older folk of much shorter stature. Hobart council gets full marks for two things, encouraging artists to paint utility boxes on the kerb-side, and introducing those handsome stainless steel waste and recycle bins throughout the CBD.

But for some reason, known only to the gods, those same councillors forgot the presentation of our CBD’s front door, the docks. The bins down there are old and create a truly crappy first impression of what I believe is a truly beautiful city. Show your civic pride and replace those bins before the next cruise ships arrive. “IT’s not the name of the suburb, it’s the people that make it” is great advice ( Mercury, December 23). What an inspirational article and motivator for all students to strive for their optimum level of education, irrespective of whatever school or college they attend. The employment market is so competitive in today’s world and the students who choose to hang in, complete Year 12 and indeed progress beyond with their studies will ultimately be rewarded for their efforts.
