- ROB McGUIRE

SORELL won its sixth game in a row and moved closer to the top of the Bowls Tasmania South Division One Women’s Pennant when it defeated Sandy Bay on Thursday by three shots on the synthetic green at Sorell.

Chris Dowl was no match for the accuracy of Sorell’s Leona Smith, with Smith winning by 16 shots.

With Gwen Scott and Barbara Walker in good form, Sandra Hawksley defeated Yv- onne Buckley by seven shots. Close bowls put pressure on Buckley from the start and Hawksley raced to a nine-shot lead before Buckley could score. Hawksley stretched the lead to 12 shots, though Buckley was able to reduce the final deficit to seven shots. Sandy Bay won on the other rink with Robyn Leggett having an emphatic 20-shot win over Jan Cowen.

Sorell was one shot in front overall going into Leggett and Cowan’s last end. Cowan’s No. 2 Margaret Robertson drew two shots that Sandy Bay’s Laura Best and Leggett could not budge, resulting in a threeshot win for Sorell.

Despite having bowls in the head each end, it took Kathleen Page four ends to score against a fast-starting Judy Williams. Page led by three shots at the lunch break and eventually won by two shots.

Leonie Price struggled be- fore lunch but settled after the break, with Price converting several times with multiple shot scores and winning six of the final 10 ends to defeat Val Lukasek by one shot.
