These folk are back with genuine in-tent

SCOTTISH folk band Breabach sold out The Spiegeltent when they visited Hobart in 2015, and the same result is expected when they make their highly anticipated return next week.

Renowned as one of the UK’s most dynamic contemporary folk groups, Breabach — Calum MacCrimmon (pipes, whistles), Megan Henderson (fiddle), Ewan Robertson (guitar), James Duncan Mackenzie (pipes, bouzouki) and James Lindsay (double bass) — have steadily worked their way to the forefront of the genre since forming back in 2005.

After being named Scottish Folk Band of the Year at the 2012 Scots Trad Music Awards, and then Live Act of the Year at the 2013 instalment, Breabach solidified their standing in 2016 with the release of their award-winning fifth album, Astar.

A hit with fans and critics alike, Astar was named Album of the Year at the Scots Trad Music Awards, and European Album of the Year at the Songlines Music Awards.

The album features guest appearances from Australian didgeridoo player Mark Atkins, indigenous singer Yirrmal, Maori tradition bearer Scott Morrison, Canadian violinist Olivier Demers, and Norwegian hardanger fiddler Olav Luksengard Mjelva.

Now Breabach are back in Australia to promote Astar, embarking on a 17-date tour that features performances at the Port Fairy Folk Festival, the Blue Mountains Folk Festival, the National Folk Festival, and in The Spiegeltent on the Hobart waterfront from 6.30pm on n

Tuesday. Tickets are $40, $35 concession, for bookings go to www.spiegeltenthobart.com

Breabach also play at the Chudleigh Hall next Thursday (March 15), and at Mountain Mumma at Sheffield on March 1616.
