New strings to teacher’s bow

A TRUMPET-playing teacher who believes in practising what you preach has received two honours in the latest National Excellence in Teaching Awards.

Taroona High School music director Glenn Schultz was one of 12 Australian educators recognised in the annual NEiTA program.

At the award ceremony in Melbourne last Friday, Mr Schultz also received the inaugural ASG NEiTA Founders’ Award for Leadership.

Selected from nominations received last year, the national recipients were honoured for their inspiring and innovative contribution to teaching.

Now in its 23rd year, NEiTA has contributed more than $1 million in professional development grants to outstanding teachers in Australia and New Zealand.

Mr Schultz was nominated by a parent from the school community for his role in developing and maintaining programs that foster musical excellence.

A teacher for 21 years, Mr Schultz is constantly looking for ways to enhance students’ engagement in music.

More than 750 students at his school are enrolled in an elective music program, making up 75 per cent of the student body.

As a musician, Mr Schultz says he feels lucky to have a performance career alongside his teaching career.

He’s continually inspired when performing with the world-class musicians of the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra.

Through the orchestra, Mr Schultz has made connections around the world and this has enabled him to engage visiting artist for concerts, masterclasses, workshops and lessons at the school.

Exposing his students to other performers and teachers, and engaging local musicians as tutors, has been crucial to their inspiration, motivation and achievement.

Parents, grandparents, student councils, school boards, parent associations, management committees and community groups throughout Australia nominated about 1450 educators for this year’s NEiTA program.

NEiTA chairman Allen Blewitt said the national recipients had made their mark in local communities throughout Australia. www.asg.com.au/neita
