Uni forced to fight all the way by OHA

-

UNIVERSITY made it backto-back wins in the Old Scholars on Saturday with a hard-fought 12-point victory over OHA at University.

Constant pressure made scoring difficult early, before both teams found their range. Brad Green was a focal point for Uni with two first-quarter goals and OHA coach Brodie Langford was dangerous with two of his own.

Scores were locked late in the first quarter until an Ian Callinan special from an acute angle gave OHA a six-point lead at quarter time.

It was a similar margin at the long break, before University’s midfield began to control the stoppages in the third term, resulting in goals to Ethan Brock (two) and Green.

Langford replied for OHA, but the momentum was with the Students who led by a goal at three-quarter time.

OHA gave everything in the last, but Uni had the answers to take a deserved win against a gallant Ships outfit.

Among the best for Uni were midfielders Brock and Grant King who worked tirelessly all day, creative forward Blake Waight, and full back Nathan Hardy who kept OHA’s Josh Hall goalless.

For OHA, Callinan gave his all, Langford provided a target all game and ruckman Callum Garvey held his own against the Rainbow’s tall timber.

Richmond returned to the winners’ circle with a 69-point victory over Hutchins in a replay of the 2017 grand final.

Richmond had winners all over the ground, which would have been very pleasing for coach Alex Gilmour after its first-up loss to OHA.

Luke Polanowski and Blake Anderton were best for Richmond, with David Cragg kicking four goals. Matt Lister, Aiden Webster and Kevin Jubb battled hard for Hutchins.

St Virgil’s pushed DOSA for three quarters at New Town before falling short.
