Bulldogs chasing perfect season

- SHAUN McMANUS

THE Claremont Junior Football Club under-13 girls’ team have been unstoppable all season, and full forward Nikki Hayes hopes it can win one more game tomorrow so she can break her premiership duck. North Hobart Oval will host the best young female sides in Hobart tomorrow with a gala day of Southern Tasmanian Junior Football League grand final action.

The girls’ action will kick off at noon with the undefeated Bulldogs facing Kingborough in the under-13 grand final.

Nikki, 11, is aiming to win her first premiership.

“[We just need] to work together,” Nikki said.

STJFL president Jim Horne, who also coaches the Claremont club, said about 30 girls’ teams took part from under-11 to under-17 this year.

He doesn’t expect his allconquering side to have it all their own way against Kingborough tomorrow.

“We’ve played them two or three times this year, and they have been very close games each time,” Horne said.

The AFL’s Name Our Team initiative with the Mer

cury to pick the name of male and female Tasmanian representative teams from next year has been whittled down to five options: Tasmania Devils, Mariners, Mavericks, Storm and Warriors.

Claremont player Charlotte Stacey, 12, is backing a traditional favourite.

“[I would pick] the Devils because it sounds fearsome — it’s a Tassie name,” she said.
