Sexton bid to rein in rates

RACE FOR MAYOR

- JIM ALOUAT Urban Affairs Reporter

COUNCIL rate rises would be overseen by an independent regulator if Hobart Deputy Lord Mayor Peter Sexton is successful in his bid to become the city’s next lord mayor.

Ald Sexton, pictured, said he would push for a major change in the way any increases in council rates were determined in Tasmania and would support council rates being regulated by an independent economic regulator.

“Councils are monopolies, which are currently completely free to increase rates by any amount at will with no independent scrutiny of their decision,” he said.

“Rather than allow rate increases to be influenced by political processes, which are very often unscientific and without an economic basis, states such as NSW and Victoria have established an independent regulator, which sets a cap on rate increases and provides clear and independent justification for any rate increase.”

Ald Sexton would also campaign for improved regional public transport, affordable housing supported by developer contributions, safe cycling and pedestrian environments.

Ald Sexton said he was against uncapped aldermanic expenditure, especially on travel and professional development, and unregulated short-stay tourist accommodation.

In an obvious dig at sitting Lord Mayor Ron Christie, Ald Sexton said he would restore the dignity of the office of the lord mayor.

“I will refrain from making personal statements, which are contrary to council policy other than during council debate,” he said.

“As an independent candidate for lord mayor, I will represent all ratepayers and residents with no obligation to any political party, lobby group or members of a ticket.

“I oppose any grouping of aldermen, which could factionalise council and its decision making.”

Ald Sexton and Ald Christie traded barbs this week over Christie’s stance on tourism.
