Lions keen to get off the mark with a win

CTPL TEAMS

- ADAM SMITH

UNIVERSITY coach Ben Harrison will get an immediate insight into how his club’s preseason has them placed for 2018-19 today against a side he believes sets the CTPL standard.

After having a round-one bye, the Lions head to Kangaroo Bay to open their campaign against Clarence, which brushed aside Glenorchy last Saturday.

There will be a host of new faces for Uni — Zac Phair and Leo Fountain will make their first-grade debuts, late acquisition Chris Brown will play his first match for the club, while Jesse Greenwood gets the chance to add to his eight first-grade games from the past two seasons.

Despite the relative inexperience within the side, Harrison is confident if the group sticks to the basics it can push a talent-laden Roos armed with Sheffield Shield quicks Sam Rainbird and Riley Meredith.

“We just look forward to the challenge against Clarence because they probably really set the standard around the way everybody should play their cricket,” Harrison said.

“You know what to expect with Clarence, and that’s a fantastic contest.

“All the games we played against them last year were that every time. We expect nothing less.

“For us it is about getting duration into our one-day cricket, we showed if we can bat 50 overs we can be a really dangerous side to play against.”

The Lions will lean on leftarm quick Andrew Kealy to lead the way with the ball, while Harrison is optimistic Noah van de Werken can take the next step with the bat.
