JL helps light up Usman

- BEN HORNE

USMAN Khawaja arrived in Dubai with his career at the crossroads, but coach Justin Langer was instead worried about his megawatt smile.

At first sight both left-handed openers are a stark contrast, but there is a magic about Langer that might have just unlocked the sleeping giant of Australian cricket.

Khawaja’s epic nine-hour century against Pakistan has been hailed as one of the greatest innings by an Australian.

“People have talked about whether he can play spin bowling — I never had a single doubt Usman Khawaja could play spin bowling,” Langer said.

“The last three months (he’s been saying), ‘ what do I need to do for the UAE, JL?’ “‘Just keep smiling, mate’. “He’s done all the hard work, he’s a beautifully talented player and he’s got an amazing temperament, so with that smile and that temperament he brings great leadership.”

Selectors have never trusted him against spin, but after Australia’s 10-60 collapse on day three, Langer had Khawaja tutor his fellow left-handers.

Langer hosted a “lefties’ convention”, but he was empowering Khawaja.

“JL is an extremely good communicator. You know when he talks to you about cricket, he’s so passionate and he just wants the best for everyone,” Khawaja said.

“It’s obviously only one Test match so far, but I think he instils a lot of belief in the guys. He’s been there and done it too, obviously, so you get a lot of reassurance from that.”
